Joined Facebook today

December 23rd, 2008 at 12:08 am

I set up a MySpace page ages ago because one friend invited me, but I've never done anything with it and don't even visit the site.

Today, I got 4 e-mails from old college friends inviting me to Facebook. I e-mailed one of them to make sure the invites were real and not the result of some virus invading someone's address book. Once he confirmed it, I went ahead and signed up. In no time at all, I had messages from 3 of my friends. I also found a bunch of other people who I either went to college or med school with. Clearly, Facebook is the preferred site over MySpace for social networking. I will try and avoid getting sucked in and spending too much time there, but it is really neat seeing these people who I've been out of touch with for so many years.

Hmm. I really, really need to join Facebook.

I've read elsewhere that, from a career point-of-view, it's important nowadays to establish a web presence. Supposedly, it shows that you are relevant, web-savvy (enough), and could give you an edge if there are equivalent candidates interviewing for jobs. Supposedly, a lot of employers check you online nowadays....

That for LinkedIn. Oh yeah, and I really should make some business cards too. Have not updated that for quite some time.

Facebook is very addictive. I personally prefer myspace because of the blog feature, but so many of my friends have pretty much given up on myspace and use facebook.

I think my sister is on myspace...but now I'm not sure which one it is. She really likes it. She wants me to join. I'm addicted enough to this site as it is...do I really need more addictions?

That was my thought, ccf. I don't see myself spending too much time at facebook, though, because I'm not one for idle chit chat. I enjoy topic-based discussion here, but not just random socializing for the heck of it. I just thought it would be nice to catch up with a few people.

I agree with Cassandra that Facebook is addicting! I've reconnected with a lot of my childhood friends.

I just joined a few weeks ago, I find it fun but not yet addicting. I don't think I have enough contacts yet to make it addicting.

Welcome to Facebook. Smile It is amazing how many people you can meet on there.

One thing I have read though, is that if you are looking for a job, some employers have ways of checking out your profile (if you have one.) So, it's a good idea to be selective about what applications you add and what pictures you post.

I joined and can keep up with 7 of my siblings. The oldest doesn't have internet at home, so she doesn't have an account.

My youngest sister learned a good lesson, though. She asked me a question on there and wanted me to keep it under my hat. Um, yeah, EVERYONE can see that!

i've been on facebook for about three or four years and myspace for about 6 years. i pretty much stopped using myspace after i found facebook because facebook is about interacting with friends and things like that whereas (i found) myspace was all 'me me me'. i mainly use it to keep in touch with people.
