I lost $4,300 today

July 26th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

They're just paper losses, but I decided to see how today's stock market sell-off impacted our portfolio. We lost about $4,300, or about 1.07%.

I don't plan to make any changes or sell anything. I just plan to keep everything on autopilot and continue our automatic investing plans same as always. I'm 20 years from retirement so in the grand scheme of things, today is just a little blip in a very long line.

You are right, it is just a blip. I don't know how much I lost today, but I know since last Sept., when I started writing it down, I am up $52,000.

Your response made me curious, Ima. Since 9/29/06, our portfolio is up $62,000, even after today's correction. I like looking at it that way a whole lot better. Thanks for the reality check.

I'm not even going to bother to look tonight. I'll wait until the end of the week.

Despite all the media attention, a 2% market drop really isn't all that significant. It doesn't even rate among the worst days historically. The problem is that as the DJIA gets higher and higher, the numbers get bigger and bigger but people forget to look at those numbers in context. In 1987 before "Black Monday", the Dow had hit a record high of about 2,700. Just recently, it stood at 14,000. A 300 point drop means a lot less at 14,000 than it would at 2,700.

I peeked and so far,I'm only out $1200. I put away the panic button.

I will check when the Dow is back over 14k.

I can't make myself look yet, but I'm guessing I lost about $2000. I'm consoling myself with the idea that I'm buying cheap. My funds are just "on sale" this week.

The 1987 crash was a 23% drop. This week, the DJIA was down a little over 4%. No comparison.

After the 1987 crash, the DJIA was around 1,700. Last week it was 14,000. If it stages a similar recovery, in 2027, the DJIA would be in the neighborhood of 112,000. That would be just fine with me as I plan to retire right around then.
