$5,300 poorer today

May 29th, 2008 at 08:24 pm

We met with the caterer for our daughter's Bat Mitzvah last night. Along with finalizing the menu and decorating details, we also had to make a partial payment of $5,300. I knew it was coming. We had the money saved. But I still hate writing checks for big numbers like that.

We're really happy with how the menu planning went. It all sounds delicious and we're looking forward to attending the party. We've been to so many affairs where the food was tolerable at best. We've even been to some where we left the reception and headed straight to a restaurant because we were so hungry. That won't be happening after this affair.

Now if only we could disown some family members and whittle down the guest list by 10 or 20 or 30 people. Oh well. Can't have everything.

Ahh, yes the blessing of having a lot of family Smile Sorry for the big check writing day. It would have made me slightly nauseated to say the least. So, I am glad you survived. And just think--one day she will want a wedding too. Smile

I know that you must be relieved to get the menu part planned and over with. I hope that it is a great success.

That last line made me laugh.

Yeah, I'm beginning to feel the same way about paying out large sums. Kind of funny, because I remember not being like that once....

sagegirl and nance are right, sounds like you're getting good practice for the future wedding!

It all sounds like great fun and it will obviously be a wonderful event, BTW.

All the comments about a future wedding are very supportive, folks. Thanks a lot.

I figure we had 13 years to save for this. Hopefully, we'll have another 13 or more to save for a wedding. We already fund a 529 for college so that's in place. Hopefully, by the time she get married, she'll be done college and the money that was going toward that will be able to go toward the wedding.

Ugh! I get to times that by 3!! I'm sure it will be a GREAT party! Forget about the nasty big check and enjoy! (While ignoring said relatives....)

boomeyers - I don't want to disown people because I don't like them. I just wish I didn't have such a big family that I had to invite. My wife and I have struggled with the guest list for a while. There are many relatives who we never see except at weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and funerals and we don't talk to them any other time. We have to invite them because that's what everybody in the family does, but we don't feel close to these people at all and some of them hardly know our daughter. There are probably 40 or so people who fit that description on the guest list. We'd much rather cross them off and invite more of our friends, but it isn't worth pissing off half the family. All we can hope is that they won't all show up.

Do your relatives live close by? With the gas prices being what they are - some may not come. We ran into the same situation with our younger son's wedding. He invited everyone in the family but not all came to the wedding. Of course it was a few states over from where I live. Have they RSVP'd to you?

Aleta - Sorry, I missed your post somehow. We are in NJ. We have guests invited from NJ, PA, NY, CT, MD, VA, SC, FL, CA and probably a couple of other states I'm not thinking of. Honestly, I don't think gas prices will be much of an issue for our crowd.
