Friday and still more decluttering

June 21st, 2008 at 02:08 am

Ok, maybe posting is keeping me motivated, too.

I've realized there are two basic types of decluttering.

1. Recurrent: Things that keep re-accumulating like mail, laundry, papers to be shredded, etc.

2. One-time: Things that once eliminated or put away pretty much stay that way.

I worked on a little of both today. I went through the mail pile on the kitchen table and got some in the recycling bin and some filed away.

I then found myself in... (cue ominous music)... the basement. I took a few things down to put them away and decided to stay and take care of a little clutter down there. I worked on the area near the bottom of the stairs. I found a few things that went to the garage in a yard sale box, 2 outgrown coats that went in the give-away pile, some papers for recycling, some paper and plastic supermarket bags that got put where they belong and some old cans of paint that will go out in the trash next week (all latex - safe to throw out). I swept the floor in the area and consolidated/organized the stuff that was staying there. It looks much nicer now when you walk down the stairs.

My last thing came after my nightly walk. Rather than going right into the house, I grabbed my pruning clippers and a trash can and cut back the branches growing from the base of the tree in front of the house. I do that once or twice a year and it was past time to be done.

By the way, my daughter has been having a great time playing Rush Hour (that I unearthed a few nights ago).

I've followed your decluttering journey of the week and today I parted with two bags of stuff for the resale store - two bags of trash - went through the file drawer and purged all non-essentials. I have decided to part with a huge overstuffed chaise lounge that takes up 1/3 of my fourth bedroom (used as a junk room til now). i might try craigslist for $50 and if I have no hits I will freecycle.
Keep posting and maybe I'll remain inspired!

Worked on a wee bit of the garage. A couple of things put away, one to give away, and one for the trash. And, I have made it a point that if I don't wear something this year, out it goes, so I wore a shirt that I'm not sure I've ever worn. I've already tossed out a bunch of work clothes because for some reason, I usually wear the same ones each time. I'm going to be doing more digging in the closet for never worn or little worn clothes! Keep us going, Disneysteve!

Great job, Steve! You are keeping me motivated as well. I brought outdoor toys out of the garage and into a bin on our backyard deck.

You are are right...there are different types of organization.

It sounds like you are doing great.

If you are interested in delving in to the topic a bit more, I highly recommend Julie Morgenstern's "Organizing From The Inside Out." You can check out Julie's web site at www.juliemorgenstern.com to see if you like her style. She also contributes to Oprah's web site.

Is it in the air or what?? A friend is considering moving due to her son's health and when I expressed difficulty getting rid of stuff she said. "Look at something and think about if you want to move it across the country". That helps!

homebody, I've often said that the only way to really clean your house is to move. Since we have no plans to move for about the next 20 years, I need to do the second best thing and try and declutter what we've got here.

I became very motivated to start decluttering in the master bedroom starting with the dresser. Before you know it, you're on to the next piece of furniture. You do have a lot of energy. Good job!
