Update on wife's business opportunity

June 5th, 2019 at 05:31 pm

Last month I posted about my wife taking 18 bags that she made (she sews and quilts) to an area yarn shop for them to sell on consignment. Friday will be 4 weeks since we did that. We haven't heard anything from the owner so my wife called her today.

Nothing sold the first 3 weeks but this past week she sold 2 bags! She settles up weekly so will be sending the payment at the beginning of next week.

The bags were each either $35 or $40 so total of between $70 and $80. DW gets 75% after any credit card fee so that will be at least $50 and maybe more.

She's never done anything like this before so we're excited. And the shop still has 16 more of her bags to sell.

Maybe she can look into doing an etsy store as well my daughter does that with her business and she is doing good with it...although it does cost a bit but not sure how much...worth a look though...my daughter now has jewellry all around the world!

That's fantastic! I'm curious what the bags look like. Any chance a picture could be taken?

That's great! Right now, in Illinois, more and more stores are offering reusable grocery bags because there is the chance we will be taxed on plastic bags.

ccf - She makes a variety of styles from simple tote bags to ones with multiple pockets inside and out, snaps, etc. Here are a few examples.

mumof2 - My wife is lousy at self-promotion. She just doesn't have the sales gene (I do). She's messed around with a website. I think she has an Etsy account. But she's just never done anything with it. I could definitely help her but it's just never been something we devoted the time to. This opportunity was perfect for her because she loves making the items and this way someone else is doing the work to sell them.

There are actually some other shops in the area that do the same thing. Maybe she'll check into some of the others as well.

If I could get her to do Etsy by herself, that would be great, but I don't see that happening and I just don't have the time to do it with her.

Disneysteve...I get it but if you get the photos loaded all she has to do is put in the prices...any new pieces she just needs to upload a photo and the info it really gets the word out there...if it starts to generate income then maybe that is an incentive for her...it really is easy she can have sales for mothers day/christmas etc...either way I hope she sells mor of them and love that she is enjoying making them but tell her better if she made money and loving what she is doing..maybe she can make mommy & me bags to sell as well...lots of opportunities out there and more and more people tend to shop online now

mumof2 - Yeah, maybe selling a few bags this way will boost her confidence a bit and we can revist doing Etsy. She also makes a variety of other items that she can sell there too. She's not opposed to the idea. I think she's just hesitant to start.

It is harder selling handmade stuff like this online where people can't see and touch the items to see how they're made. I know she worries about people getting things and not being happy with them. And there's the added step of shipping which you don't have with in-person sales.

We'll see. Maybe one of these days.

Got the payment yesterday. It came to $54.73.

One bag was $35. One was $40. Both were credit card sales so 2.7% fee then the 25% commission. We were both excited that a couple of items sold. Hopefully more will sell soon. The owner did give us a bunch of suggestions of patterns that are popular so now that we know things are selling, she'll probably buy some fabric and make some new bags in those patterns.

Thanks for posting the pics, just now got around to checking them out. They look like very nice size bags. It's inexpensive to list on Etsy from my understanding. People who buy on Etsy like to buy handmade, non commercial items and do not mind paying more than they might if buying at Walmart for example. She can always offer refunds if necessary, upon return of the item, just like on eBay.
