Decluttering update

June 20th, 2008 at 02:04 am

I actually wasn't going to post again about decluttering yet, but since some others are finding it motivating, I'm happy to help out.

Nothing exciting to report from Wednesday. Just sorted through some more papers on the bookcase.

Oh, we did get our new RecycleBank container for our township recycling program. I posted about that not long ago. With the new program, your recyclables get weighed each week and you earn credits that can be redeemed for gift cards and discounts at a bunch of local merchants. Our first pickup isn't until July 3 but I've been saving up our recyclables in anticipation and yesterday after work, I loaded up the new bin, so that counts as decluttering since a bunch of stuff was scattered around in the garage.

Today, after work, I discovered that my wife had done some decluttering of her own. There was a pile of assorted stuff on the floor in our bedroom in front of the cabinet where we keep all our wrapping paper, ribbon, gifts bags and such. She got rid of most of the pile. So I made that area my focus tonight and went through the remaining part of the pile that was mostly my stuff.

I also straightened up all my sheet music by my piano.

How's everyone else doing?

Hey, I want a program like that! Our county's recycling program is so successful, they have a hard time keeping up with the huge recycling bins (tractor trailer size). We don't have trash pick-up, just dump stations. So, I guess, no gift cards for me, so sad.

I sent some wire hangers out to the recycle bin. I went through the kids school papers from the end of the year. I recycled the papers from our South Dakota vacation from last July. I clean out our junk basket that sits on the kitchen counter...tossed old car keys.

I tossed some old school supplies that I found in a box in the garage. Since my kids have graduated, oh, a while ago.....I will give to several school programs later during the year, but these are somewhat used and probably wouldn't be accepted anyway. Tomorrow, Hubby and I plan a run to donate stuff in a box in the garage.

Good job everyone. ccf, I came across several keys in a drawer the other day. I have no idea what they are from and they've been in that drawer for years, but I just can't bring myself to toss them. I'm afraid that once I do, I'll discover what they were from and need them.

Sounds like you are doing great Steve. It is inspiring to me. I'm still chugging along at my nice little pace, but I'm seeing it start to look better and better.

I'm ready for the garage sale tomorrow. Whatever doesn't sell is going to either 1. My friend's garage sell, or 2. VVA. Either way, I am very decluttered! For now, at least.

We haven't done a garage sale this year. We had a very successful one last year but just haven't gotten to it this year. We'll probably skip this year and do one next spring.

I went through lots of stuff on Monday night in time for the recycling pick up Tuesday. Then last night I rearranged all the furniture in my room. EVERY piece was moved someplace else and now I have room for my new comfortable chair I bought. I really wanted a comfy chair that I could use instead of sitting on the bed all the time to watch tv or use my computer. I even was able to move my filing cabinet next to the chair as a little table for drinks and such. I really love how the room turned out now I just need to organize the last few things.

I currently have 6 boxes to move to the garage plus three boxes to go through and the two laundry baskets that are full of things to decide what to do with. ugh. My goal is now one box a night every other night. I just have to much stuff and need to let some of it go.
