October 2013 Survey Income

November 1st, 2013 at 12:54 pm

To recap, I am a family practice physician. I get to do a lot of medical market research studies and surveys and it provides a nice side income. My goal for the year is $8,000.

For the month of October, I collected $897 from survey payments which was great. My goal has been $800/month since June and my average for June-October has been
$902.40 so I'm ahead of that. November should be a very good month. I did 3 large studies in October and those payments should come in this month ($425, $175, $175) along with all of the usual stuff.

I understand that because you are physician you do a different kind of survey than the usual, but why is the compensation so high? Is it because they figure that highly-paid physicians wouldn't do a survey for less? Or are they long and complicated? Just curious.

CB, I think it's a combination of things. As you said, a professional who earns $80 or $100/hr or more isn't going to spend an hour doing a survey for $5 or $10.

Some of the programs are somewhat long and tedious.

Some of the studies are fairly involved. The one I did a few weeks ago for $425 involved first doing an online screening survey, then a telephone pre-interview, and finally a researcher actually coming to my office and spending 3 hours with me. Others involve 60 minute phone conversations along with a simultaneous online program. Or me going to a nearby office for an in-person study.

Most of what I do is straight online surveys though. The pay for those varies by length of survey but it's typically at a rate (based on the estimated time to complete) of about $80-100/hour.

This makes my $10 for a survey on port flushing and locking techniques seem like peanuts.

RoadWorkAhead, a lot of my shorter surveys are for $10 or $20. I got a check on Friday for a $20 survey and I just did a $10 one about an hour ago. Most are probably under $50 but it really adds up over the course of the month. I also have a few ongoing panels that I'm on. One pays me $150 every month for participating so I always have that coming in and there are a couple of smaller ongoing ones too.

You always do so well on the surveys.
