Financial date with my wife - done

March 7th, 2018 at 06:59 pm

I take care of all of the financial stuff in our household but from time to time, my wife and I will sit down for a "financial date" when I update her on everything that's been going on and where things stand.

I'm off today and we're in the midst of a snowstorm so it was a perfect opportunity for our latest financial date.

I showed her how my income has changed over the last 3 years with my transition from family practice to urgent care. I then reviewed where the bulk of the extra income has gone (college costs, malpractice insurance, travel). I explained how we're currently spending $3,100/month for college but the last payment will be made later this month and then going forward we'll have an extra $3,100/month to direct to other things and I told her how I plan to do that.

She asked a number of questions. We talked about the financial impact of our daughter finishing college but moving back home with us. We talked a bit about retirement planning.

All in all, it was a good update. I always like to make sure she knows what's going on even though I'm the one managing stuff on a day to day basis.

I love the idea of getting together and reviewing finances.

A little like a "State of the Union" address.

It really is something I think all couples ought to be doing. It is pretty normal for one person to handle stuff so it's important to regularly update the other person. Even if you make big decisions jointly, as you should, the person not doing the day to day stuff really doesn't have a big picture understanding.

My wife knows my income went up. Of course she knows our daughter is finishing school. And she knows and trusts that I'm on top of everything and know what I'm doing but I still want to go over the actual numbers with her periodically. Also, she wasn't able to come with me to our accountant this year when we did our taxes so she missed that opportunity to get the year-in-review and future planning piece of the story.

That’s great! I used to schedule dates to go over things but lately it’s been more of a need-to-know basis. Though my partners have access to this blog and some of my main spreadsheets.

What a smart man you to keep your wife abreast of your financial picture. I agree, couples should do this so everyone is in the know.

My DH and I have a monthly budget meeting where we go over all the various financial things. He's not terribly interested in most of it - but I want to make sure he's at least heard about it. Smile

It is actually great you manage seamlessly and cope easily with all these obstacles! I believe that you'll be able to achieve the best!
