Year end numbers

December 31st, 2019 at 09:15 pm

Now that the market is closed, I did the final 2019 update on our portfolio spreadsheet.

12/31/18: $1,023,684.61
12/31/19: $1,329,432.03

An increase of $305,747.42 for the year. That number is incredible to me. It really shows the power of investing and compounding. That's more money than I earned in 2019 gross and a little more than double my take home pay. Obviously, a strong stock market had a lot to do with it. We'll see how long that continues.

I hope you all had a great year and have an even better 2020.

That number is incredible as well as something to rejoice over! Good job! I have had friends inform me that they can't save enough to make a difference and I keep saying, saving a little steadfastly will add up and compound interest is your friend. But it is easier to complain and whine than to actually save and possibly tighten one's belt. Congratulations on a fine job!

Very true, rob62521. We opened our first mutual fund account in August 1992 right after we got married. We signed up for a $50/month auto deposit which we later increased as our funds allowed. Even though we stopped funding that particular account many years ago, it still has a current balance of about $110,000.

The most important step is to start and keep at it to whatever degree you are able. And now with commission-free trades and zero minimum accounts, there's no excuse. You can invest just a few dollars at a time. Even if all you can do is $10/month, do it. Before you know it, you'll have more than you ever thought possible.

Fantastic! I was very pleased with our retirement progress in 2019 as well. We didn't have a big increase to send in compared to previous years, but the market did well. I agree with you and rob that savings something consistently, and attempting to increase it when possible makes for financial security over time!

Great returns for the year! I love the “magic” of compounding. Wishing you continued success in 2020.
