Electric meter update

March 11th, 2020 at 01:51 am

We finally got an answer from the utility company today. They said that the meter was 99.7% accurate (I think that was the number). So apparently there's no refund coming our way and we've somehow managed to increase electricity usage 40-60% in the past year without changing anything we do or use in our home.

At least there was no cost to getting our meter replaced. I'm really curious to see how the bills are going forward. If the continue to show higher usage, I guess that will confirm the answer. If, however, it shows a significant drop in usage, I may reach out again to complain and question that analysis.

Well, that's interesting. It's hard to believe that your electricity usage went up that much without changing anything isn't it? Could you have an older appliance that, due to aging, is using more electricity than it did when new?

If you have any outdoor outlets, could someone be using them without your knowledge?

We don't really have anything that is so old it should be a problem. Our fridge is from 2015. Our washer and dryer are relatively recent. Our dishwasher is brand new. Our basement freezer is about the oldest thing we have and that's less than 10 years old. Furnace and AC are recent, too.

We do have an outdoor outlet but I think we'd notice a big extension cord running through our yard.

That is kind of bizarre. I can't imagine frugal family of Steve using that much more energy.

I had the same thing told to me when my meter went bonkers I believe utilities simply do not want people to ever assume their meters could be wrong because they would be dealing with someone every month.
That is too big of a jump IMO to be unnoticed and my guess is your use will return to normal as the meter probably had a problem.
When I complained and was told it was working at 99% accurate they seemed so smug. The meter was not replaced immediately but instead for the next 3 months recorded zero use and when they FINALLY dawned on them it was costing them I sent them a copy of their assurance the meter was perfect. They never said another word about but was super interested in getting me a NEW meter ASAP.

Have you considered that the old meter was the one that was inaccurate and was under-reporting your usage?

lurker - The high bills were with the OLD meter. It's only been a month since we got the new one so I don't know if our bills will drop now.
