COVID-related savings

April 29th, 2020 at 01:57 am

I know I'm not the only one experiencing this but we've actually saved a significant amount of money as a result of the world shutting down.

For March, which we only lost half of, our spending was down by $500 compared to March 2019.

For April, which we've lost all of, our spending was down by $1,000 compared to April 2019.

I'm not incredibly surprised but I didn't expect the savings to be quite that high. It really makes me wonder about things going forward.

I think I will take a look at the actual charges last March and April to see where most of that savings has come from. I'm quite sure that dining out will be the single biggest factor. That's actually the thing I miss most about the whole quarantine thing. I know we aren't going to stop eating out (once we are able to do it again) but I will definitely be more aware of how much we're spending in the process.

How about all of you? Have you noticed a drop in spending?

We really haven't seen a difference in our budget...we thought we would with gas but since we do daily trips to the hospital for treatment then it works out about the same as before...and we would rather cook then eat out...so we don't often

I had zero spending in eating out also, and zero spending in gas for the car (working from home). My grocery spending went down some too because I have only been going once a month and haven't been making those quick pit stops on the way home from work because I had a craving for something.

No eating out, no gas, no haircuts, have translated into savings for me. But I have spent more on groceries, because of stocking up, and no attempt to find the cheapest deal.

According to my Ynab numbers I saved quite a bit in eating out and gas alone. Unfortunately it is not just sitting in my checking account. Now I need to find out where that “savings” went!

I haven't seen any +/- in our spending. Our grocery spending was absurd in March, but has normalized a bit this month. The absurdity was probably some stocking up and also the more expensive food being left behind, etc. & just paying more for everything (paying full price for whatever we could find, buying more groceries at more expensive stores, etc.). I am surprised how much that "normalized" in April since all the above is still mostly true, but it isn't as bad as it was in March. The rest is same as usual, we don't do much day-do-day spending as a rule. If we saved $30 in gas, we spent $30 more on groceries.

We haven’t seen a difference in our budget either - mainly because what we are saving by not going out is being spent on higher prices of things not available. We don’t have a food shortage in Australia but our grocery chains are giving less discounts at the moment, it is only happening when things are overstocked (like meat now). Example is there was no hand sanitizer anywhere so I bought 2 bottles online for $45 (!!!!).

Our grocery spending is up. Gas costs are down slightly - but that's mostly due to low gas prices. Otherwise our spending is pretty much unchanged.

Gas and takeout are our big ones. While we still do get the occasional takeout it is far more limited, because each time is a risk. I'm also not casual spending near as much, like picking up something from Amazon just because I want it. We are only buying what we need, because again, every package delivered is a risk.

I have also noticed significant savings from not driving very much, less food purchased out, and also nearly no unplanned trips to stores. I pretty much only went to stores once weekly with a shopping list based on a well planned menu. I think so far I have saved at least $300 more in addition what I normally do and my stimulus.

I am finding no savings basically.
