Another COVID cancellation

May 22nd, 2020 at 03:19 pm

I was planning to attend a medical conference in St. Louis in early July. I booked the hotel months ago. I realized that I haven't heard anything about the status of the convention itself so I went to their website last night and sure enough it has been cancelled.

I checked my saved email and it turns out that while I had made the hotel reservation, I had never actually registered for the convention which is why I didn't get a cancellation notice. Makes sense.

I went on and cancelled the hotel stay this morning. Fortunately, I had the good sense to not book airfare in advance so I don't have the hassle of having to cancel that.

Looks like I'll have a little staycation in July. No reason to cancel my PTO. I have more PTO than I will likely use this year anyway. I might as well use it. Hopefully by July we'll at least be able to do something fun with some of that time, even just a day trip or two. Who knows at this point?

I had a couple of these happen also and the conference was moved to online format. I think one of them will basically be a series of zoom meetings.

Staycations can be fun! It’s good to have time to enjoy & explore your own city and surrounding areas.

I'm considering doing a virtual conference coming up in June but it's really not the same. I don't want to sit and home and watch videos. I want to be in a room full of people and interacting and sharing our experiences and tips and tricks. I want to wander through the exhibitor hall checking out various products and services. I want to connect with peers around the country.

I may end up doing something virtual anyway as a way to get some of my required CME credits and because my job provides me a stipend every year so I may as well use some of it.

@disneysteve. I totally agree about not liking attending videos as substitutes for actual conferences. I am, however, enjoying working at home for the most part. I have a lot more control over my day.
