Tree removal - $2,400. Yay.

June 17th, 2020 at 08:58 pm

We've had a dead tree next to our driveway for months. I've been meaning to call our tree guy for that one. Then in the storm a couple of weeks ago, a large limb came off the big tree next to our garage. That's the 2nd time that has happened. It's time to get rid of that tree. And while they're at it, I'll have them prune the tree in front of our house.

Tree guy came today. Total damage is about $2,400. He's hoping they can come by the end of next week. Hopefully no big storms before then.

Little by little, we've taken out almost every tree on the property. Whoever plants all of the trees so close to houses clearly doesn't give any thought to what happens when those trees grow up.

If you have a newer property, the best advice I can give you is to tear out any tree that is close enough to hit the house if it falls in the future when it's 40 or 50 feet tall. Get rid of it while it's small and cheap. Also take out any tree where the roots could damage the concrete or the sewer line.

Stick to small shrubs and bushes and maybe ornamental sorts of trees that don't get that big and don't develop extensive root systems.

Unfortunately, little shrubs and small trees don't provide any shade, and that's why I have trees in my yard. Most are at least 20 feet away, though.

Shade is nice but just not worth the potential damage and expense that comes with it.

The storm we had here 2 weeks ago is the worst I recall. Our tree guy said in 8 years, it is by far the worst he's ever seen it. We had many trees down in our neighborhood, wires down all over, streets blocked, and a few houses significantly damaged. The tree guys have been working non-stop for almost 3 weeks now.

OMG I hear you we have massive gum trees which are famous for dropping limbs...they are actually called widow makers...it is great in summer hardly need the air con on as we have so much shade...but the falling limbs, the leaves and the tree roots are horrible to deal with as beautiful as this area is (its in the hills) I know I wouldn't buy a house here for these reasons...but we have to get council approval to have any removed and the bases of our trees are around 2 metres wide

mumof2 - So true. We've been in our house for 26 years and have spent thousands of dollars on tree removal and hundreds of dollars on tree-related damages. They're pretty to look at but when they put up new houses and plant trees, I don't think anyone considers the long-term effects of what's being planted.

The main tree we are having removed has roots that stretch from our garage (no root damage yet thankfully) to the fence with our neighbor (and probably passed that fence into their yard but I'm not sure). And they stretch forward almost to our driveway. Eventually, those roots would cause some very costly damage.

We can't remove the two major trees on our property that is city rules. So we have to suck it up and survive.

LAL, why aren't you allowed to remove the trees? We do need a permit to do ours, which the tree guy will get, but we can do it.

disneysteve...yes I love the wildlife the trees bring us..we have all sorts of birds, koalas possums etc...but the house takes a beating when limbs fall, the roof is always covered in leaves (not great when your in a bushfire area) and the drains have had to be done...so glad we aren't paying for the repairs....but yes can be very damaging but here we can't have removed unless they are rotting as council won't permit...they say you built around the trees then you live with them...so guess the owner just has to do that

We don't have any trees near the house, but we are in danger from the neighbors on both sides due to massive cedar and pine trees and from the one behind us due to some spindly but super tall poplars near the back of the property where the garage is. We actually sent a notarized, certified letter to the people who live behind us, to inform them that the trees were uprooting into our property and that they had dropped significant branches on our garage roof. No damage yet, but by legally informing them, and them not fixing it, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on about damages should they occur. This was after talking to them for years. They finally took down three of the worst trees, two poplars and a pine. So, yeah, don't plant trees near your house, but don't plant them where they can damage your neighbor's property, either. And never plant honeysuckle or sweet peas over your sewer pipe.
