I may have found a "new" car

August 29th, 2020 at 11:35 pm

I've been car shopping and found one today that I will probably buy if all is well when I see it in person.

I decided this time around I was going with either Carmax or Carvana. I wanted to do as much of it as possible online and have a fixed price and not have to deal with a sleazy commission-based salesperson. I'm paying cash so no need to deal with the finance department either. I had saved a search for what I wanted on both sites and have checked back daily for new inventory. One came up yesterday that was very nice but also more expensive than I wanted. Then today, a couple of new ones popped up and I jumped on one of them.

It's currently in North Carolina so I'm having it shipped to NJ ($99 fee). They'll let me know when it arrives and is ready for me to come check it out. No obligation to buy, and if I do buy, they have a 7-day return policy.

Anyway, it's a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE with just under 13,000 miles. Red exterior, black interior.

Now I just wait for it to get here and then go check it out.

It sounds like you have a sweet new-ish set of wheels. I also bought a new-ish car last year because my 20 year old car had engine issues and a whole host of other problems. I wanted to pay cash so I would not have to make payments, but due to numerous issues over the years, it took me six years to save enough money for it. I also had it checked out by my mechanic and got a carfax report. When I finally got it, I committed myself to keeping it in the best condition possible. So far, so good. Congrats! I hope it is everything you are looking for.

Wow, sounds like a great car! I drove a Camry beyond 200,000 miles, gave it to my son, he drove it for a year or so until his dad gave him a newer car -- I sold the Camry for $500 to a colleague's SIL and saw it around town for several years. Camry's run forever!

Thanks for sharing your experience so far. I would also like to move beyond the car dealer when I next purchase a vehicle, probably not for another 4 years or so.That $99 shipping fee sounds pretty reasonable to me.

The shipping fee varies based on where the car is located (makes sense). It can be as little as nothing or as much as $2,000 if the car is across the country (we live on the east coast). I figured $99 was reasonable even if I end up not buying the car.

Assuming this process goes smoothly, I will probably never walk into a dealership again.

Steve, I hope you see this.
I don’t post in the forums but I wanted to thank you for your post on the payroll tax deferral.

You are so respected here that your advice carries great weight.

I am so glad you took the time to warn about this.

Thank you, Lots of Ideas. Nice of you to say that.

The payroll tax thing is monumentally stupid and it's going to negatively affect a great many people's finances while benefiting absolutely nobody.
