Heading back to Florida

July 4th, 2021 at 01:10 am

I'm flying back down to Florida on Monday. The plan is to finish cleaning out the house, get rid of most of the furniture, and pack up everything that needs to come home with us. I was thinking about replacing some carpet but might not be able to accomplish that on short notice. At the very least, I'd like to have the carpet cleaned if possible.

I also want to meet with the realtor to go over the process moving forward, sign with him officially, and see if he has any other advice to get the house ready to put on the market.

My wife is then going to fly down on Saturday to help me finish up. The following Tuesday we're renting a truck (already reserved). We'll pack it up and hit the road for home Wednesday morning and should get home Thursday evening.

The one possible complication is Tropical Storm/Hurricane Elsa. I'm hoping it doesn't interfere with my flight on Monday. Time will tell.

I go back to work on 7/17 so if any further stuff requires me being down, I'll have to fly down on one of my weekends off since I'm out of PTO at this point. Hopefully between some friends in the development and the realtor, that won't be necessary.

A good real estate agent should have contacts for things like carpet replacement/cleaning and other incidentals. If you haven’t already chosen, those are things you can ask about.

I am sure that in Florida, selling for out of state owners isn’t unusual.

    Good luck!

Both the lawyer and the realtor have been very helpful with referrals and connections.

I got to Florida fine. There was a short flight delay but nothing significant. Elsa didn't really affect the east coast of Florida much. Some rain but that was it.

I've been doing the final clean out stuff. I've taken a couple of loads of stuff to the thrift shops, thrown out and recycled a bunch. I listed numerous things on Marketplace but have sold none so they'll all end up going to the thrift shops.

The realtor is coming on Monday to formalize our agreement. I actually have someone (sister of a guy who lives here) who is very interested in the house. She's coming to see it on Tuesday. The realtor will exempt her from the contract so no 6% commission if she buys it; he'll just charge a flat fee to do the paperwork. I have 2 other names on that exempt list also.

I didn't get anywhere with the carpets. I'll see what the realtor recommends.

I did get a couple of quotes to sell the last car and plan to do that on Tuesday. We're picking up a small rental truck Tuesday morning so we'll have that as transportation until we leave on Wednesday. At that point, I can sell the car.

LAL, I do think this will be our final visit. When we leave Wednesday morning, we likely won't be back. The realtor will handle everything from then on and closing can be done online. Leaving this time will be quite difficult. There will be tears for sure.

Glad you made it OK and that things have moved along. You have done a good job taking care of stuff. Hope your leaving wasn't too emotional.

a bit late on here...its another chapter closed and it must be so hard for you so a few tears are nothing...just shows how much you loved and cared for your uncle...hope the house sells soon...take care
