YTD income update 8/31/23

September 4th, 2023 at 07:09 pm

I reviewed our 8/31 Vanguard statements this morning. Year to date as of 8/31/23, our Vanguard accounts generated a combined $37,135.13 in investment income (interest, dividends, capital gains). If I extrapolate that out (which isn't quite how it works), that would mean about $55,700 for the year.

About 68% of our total portfolio is with Vanguard. I haven't looked at the other 32%, and a lot of that is taxable mutual funds that will pay out most of their income in December, but let's say another 20K comes from there.

That would mean around $75,000 total portfolio income for the year. I'm on track to make about $72,000 at work, though that might come in lower as I'm thinking about working even less than I already do. Add another $8,000 from ebay. That brings us to $155,000 for the year approximately. That should exceed our spending, which is partly why I'm considering working fewer hours. I think more like $130-140,000 would cover everything.

Since this is the first full year that I'm per diem, I'm really trying to see where everything falls. I won't know fully until after we do our 2023 taxes next spring, though.

Sounds like your first year of downshifting is going according to plan. Congratulations!

Thanks Dido. Even though I dropped to per diem in August 2022, it was hard to accurately track everything starting 8 months into the year. I decided I'd really start tracking 1/1/23 so I could follow a full calendar year. So far, 8 months in, we seem to be right on track. Our portfolio withdrawal rate is around 1.7%, but it's actually a bit less because I'm also still contributing to my 401k. If we can maintain that, we'll be just fine.

That's amazing that you are on track with the portfolio income. How much income are you hoping to earn to balance out working less? Like 6 hours a week?

"How much income are you hoping to earn to balance out working less? Like 6 hours a week? "

Our schedule goes in 4-hour shifts so I can work 4, 8, 12, etc. hours per week. I guess if I alternate 4 hours one week and 8 hours the next my average would be 6 hours/week.

I really don't know what I'll do. Right now, I'm in the midst of a 2-week break. I didn't really plan it that way but my last shift was 8/30. I didn't want to work the holiday weekend, then there were no open shifts I wanted this week, and we're busy both days this weekend so I couldn't pick up. My next shift isn't until 9/14. It's very nice to have so much flexibility.

Reading this, it sounds like your first year of working less has really been a success. Glad your investments are doing so well too.

Sounds like everything is going well in your semi-retirement. It’s great to have the freedom to cut back when needed. I’m sure your wife has appreciated you being around more.
