Kitchen update 5/27/25

May 27th, 2025 at 06:06 pm

Our kitchen remodel started today. The fridge got moved into the living room where our temporary kitchen is. So far, he has removed almost all of the cabinetry as well as the wall oven/microwave and the stovetop.

The first unexpected problem has arisen too. Woo hoo. When he removed the dishwasher, which we were planning on keeping because it's not that old, he discovered that there has been a slow leak somewhere. The flooring beneath it is wet and there is mold or something growing around the casing of the unit. As it turns out, we have seen a tiny bit of water in the basement recently but it's right by a window and right next to our extra fridge and freezer so we couldn't tell where the water was coming from, and it was intermittent and very minimal. So the good news is we found the source of the leak. The bad news is it means we have to add a new dishwasher to the list. Yes we could try and figure out what's wrong with this one but I have zero faith that they'd be able to do that and I don't want to reinstall it only to have it fail soon after and damage the new kitchen.

One thing that is kind of neat was seeing the likely original 1964 wallpaper and the original floor tiles.

We have an appointment tomorrow morning to actually order the cabinets. We're also setting up a time to go to the appliance store to order the oven, microwave, and now dishwasher.

I don't know if you feel like doing this or not, but I would love to see a picture of this original wallpaper.

do take a quick look at the dishwasher - our brand new one had a slow leak, and it was just the external hose had a crack in the metal part that screwed on. easy/cheap fix.

Wow that's amazing. The wallpaper I laguhed at.

Also How old is the dishwasher? And my friends home renovation cost 40% more than budgeted out. LOL. It's not quite done but I told her you get to enjoy it.

Buying that many appliances together should earn you a nice discount.

That's a bummer about the dishwasher leak, but as you said, good thing you found it. I suspect I have a leak with mine as I noticed after using it daily I began to smell a musty/mildewy odor in that area. I stopped using the dishwasher after that, and that was at least a year ago!

Note to self: I need to get that checked out.

Interesting dated wallpaper! I remember when prepping to repaint my living room walls, wondering why the paint started peeling after just a year or so, I discovered at least 2 layers of old wallpaper underneath the last paint job. Why anyone would intentionally paint over wallpaper is beyond me.

Painting over wallpaper was quite the norm. I've done it myself numerous times over the years. And yes, papering over paper was also a thing. Especially with drywall, removing old paper can be a beast of a job because many times the walls weren't primed. They just applied the paper straight to the drywall so when you try to remove it, you destroy the drywall.

Keep the updates coming! I don't know if I already made this comment or intended to and didn't get to it: your cabinets and the kitchen layout are exactly the same as the kitchen in my parents' old house.
