Kitchen update 6/30/25

June 30th, 2025 at 10:42 pm

He installed the cabinets along the sink wall today except for the one over the fridge which hasn't come in yet (there was an issue when we ordered it).

He hung the top cabinet to the left of the sink and we did not like where he put it so we went back and forth on options. The problem was it was too far to the left which he did so that it was the same distance from the window as the one to the right but that resulted in it being too close to the sliding door. We had him move it in 3". We may need to replace the cabinet on the right to go from an 18" to a 21" but we aren't sure yet.

The bottom cabinets all look nice I think though there's so much stuff piled in there right now it's hard to fully see them. The pantry is a little too tall for the space so he needs to cut down the base to make it fit which is no big deal. He just couldn't get to that today.

We scheduled the countertop folks to come out to do the template next Monday and then the install next Thursday so that's cool. By the end of next week, we should have everything pretty much in place with the possible exception of the dishwasher as we don't know when that will come in or get delivered. We also ordered the bathroom pedestal sink and that should come next Monday also. Still lots to do but it's moving along well.

I'm sure it looks like that room is taking shape!

Some of our cabinets are going in but it's not as far along as you are since our tiling will be done after the cabinets. (The tile is being installed around them - not under them.)

Are you and your DW planning what gets stored in each cabinet and drawer?

    You are really coming along!

LB what's the reason for not tiling the entire floor and then building on top of that? It's cheaper, of course, but is there any other benefit? Our old kitchen was that way but we never even considered repeating that with the remodel. The plan was always to tile the entire floor.

DS, I'm guessing that in addition to being cheaper and the fact that it doesn't show, the reason might be that it's easier to access the plumbing and electrical lines. We have a full unfinished basement beneath the kitchen and that's the origination for the water lines, for example. The contractor has rerouted the lines to the new sink location and they come up through the floor.

We also have an unfinished basement but the water pipes and electric wires all come up between the studs of the walls so nothing comes through the floor.
