Kitchen update 7/01/25

July 2nd, 2025 at 12:20 am

Our guy finished installing the cabinets today (except for the one over the fridge which we don't have yet). We had to compromise a bit on the spacing around the window but I think where we ended up is okay. Not perfect but we can both live with it. The only other alternative is to buy a new cabinet which would probably run $700 or so.

He plans to sand the ceiling and start priming tomorrow. We have a mural around the soffit that needs to be covered up before he can paint.

He said that if everything happens as scheduled (appliances, electrician, countertop) that by the end of next week we should have a working sink, oven/cooktop, and microwave that we can start using. We won't be able to fully move back into the kitchen yet since he'll still need to do the backsplash and paint the walls and do some other finishing work (molding and such) but we should be able to use the kitchen so that's pretty exciting. If he's right, that would put us at 6-1/2 weeks from start of work to a usable new kitchen which isn't bad at all.

He will also still need to do the bathroom but we knew that would get done last since the kitchen was first priority.

I returned an extra box of floor tile today. We had two boxes left but kept one just in case there are any issues down the line. That got us a $48 refund. Not much but it's something. Tomorrow I need to go back to the lighting store where we bought the bathroom fixture. The one we got was damaged when I opened it and they had to order a replacement which came in today. I'll be sure to inspect this one while I'm there just in case.

It must be tiring to be without a kitchen.

Being without a kitchen is hard. What makes it worse in our case is that we need to pass through the kitchen to get to the basement, first floor bathroom, family room, and garage. On a lot of days we just haven’t been able to do much when he was working. This morning I wanted to do some work on my eBay stuff but couldn’t access the basement, for example. And having no bathroom or running water on the main floor is a pain. But we’ve managed and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And just think of how much time you'll spend using and enjoying the new space. This time of inconvenience is nothing compared to that.

Sounds like things are moving along. Good deal on returning the tile. Sorry about the damaged light fixture, but smart move on checking it ahead of time. A number of years ago we bought a new fridge from a big box store. They started to take it off the ruck and I saw a large dent very close to the compressor. Not a dinky one, but a huge one. I refused delivery and was told they would give me some money back. I said I didn't want money back, I wanted a fridge that wasn't dented. I was informed they don't unbox them at the store, but when they deliver so there is no way to know until it is delivered. I said then I wanted it unboxed before it was brought. Our next appliance was bought from a locally owned appliance store which much to my surprise was almost the same price as the big box store and no dents!

rob, the very first appliance we bought as a married couple was an extra freezer for the basement. They took it off the truck, unboxed it, and there was a distinct crease down one side, clearly from when they loaded it in the factory because the box was fine. We sent it back and arranged another delivery date. The next one came, they opened it, and it had an identical crease down the side. At that point, we had wasted 2 days waiting for deliveries. I called the store and said I was willing to keep the damaged one but not for what we had paid. It was going in the basement so the dent really wasn't of significance. They gave us a nice discount and we kept it. Worked fine for years.
