Kitchen update 7/3/25

July 3rd, 2025 at 07:37 pm

Our guy was off today (and will be off tomorrow). Yesterday he painted the ceiling and did a couple of coats of primer over the soffit mural. The kitchen actually looked better before that because the mural was bright yellow with green vines and blue flowers so it was the only thing colorful in the room right now. Now everything is white so it's a little stark but once we do the backsplash and paint we'll remedy that situation. It's a blank slate now.

The last cabinet for over the fridge just came today so he can install that on Monday. Oven and microwave are coming Saturday. Countertop template will be done on Monday and installation on Thursday. I'm not sure what day the electrician is coming. Now that the ceiling is painted, our guy can install the new recessed lighting on the cooking side of the kitchen and the new fixture over the kitchen table area. The pedestal sink for the bathroom came today. We need to open that, make sure it's okay, and make sure we like it. And we picked up the replacement bathroom light fixture yesterday (first one was defective).

By the end of next week, we are hoping to have a functioning kitchen again.

You are getting so close! That's exciting.

Are your new cabinets white? Ours are and I like the clean 'blank slate' look of it. Then I can choose colors to contrast it. It's interesting to me that we all tend to go for the opposite of what we had before.

So our old kitchen was entirely white - cabinets, counter, sink, floor, and walls. My wife was dead set on having anything white in the new kitchen. Then we happened to be at her cousins' house. The have a woodgrain laminate floor, a brown marbled countertop, browish backsplash, stainless sink and appliances, gray walls, and white cabinets. I thought it looked great. I turned to her and said if nothing else is white, what about white cabinets. She looked around and realized how nice it looked. Darker cabinets would just make the room darker and smaller looking. Her cousins actually originally had wood grain cabinets. They didn't change anything else but refaced the cabinets and said it totally transformed the room in a good way.

Largely as a result of that, we did opt for white cabinets, but nothing else (except the ceiling) will be white. The floor is marbled gray with streaks of browns and whites and some speckles of black. The countertop is darker grays, blacks, white, and veins of sage green. We haven't settled on the backsplash or paint yet but we're leaning toward a sage green tile perhaps with blue accents (like ceramic tile with a multitone mosaic accent) and then maybe a bolder green paint. I think in the end the white cabinets will really pop rather than blending in like before when everything was white.

The combination of those colors and textures sound beautiful.

That's what we're hoping. My wife still isn't 100% sold on the white cabinets but too late now LOL. Absolute worst case scenario is that we could always have the cabinets painted in the future but hopefully once it's all together she'll like it. Over the weekend we did find backsplash tiles that we really like, sage green main tile and a translucent multi-toned blue and green glass mosaic for the accent line. We gathered paint sample strips in the green family but that was before we saw the tile. I think we might lean more toward painting the room a blue shade instead.
