Kitchen update 7/8/25

July 8th, 2025 at 09:51 pm

We actually spent most of the day out today which was nice even though we were still doing kitchen-related stuff. We went to 3 tile stores to continue searching for our backsplash. This time we remembered to bring the granite sample which ended up altering what we had been looking at when we saw it together. We came home with samples of one tile which looks very nice against the granite but is a pretty drab color. The whole goal has been to use the backsplash to bring color into the room and this won't do it. Our contractor took the granite with him when he left and he's going to go to the tile store and see what ideas he can come up with for us to consider.

He fixed the mounting of one cabinet today. He installed the cabinet over the fridge but it turns out that they sent it with the wrong doors so he put a call in to get the correct ones. He installed the microwave so that's now up and running. He did the scribe which is the finishing molding over the cabinets. That looks nice. He replaced the water lines in the bathroom which needed to be done before putting up the bead board and installing the new sink.

I'm not sure what he's got planned for tomorrow.

It is neat to watch it all come together. The next big step will be getting the countertops installed on Thursday. Assuming that goes smoothly, our guy should be able to connect the sink on Friday. While there will still be plenty left to do, we will be able to start using the kitchen again at that point. We will still be eating in our temp kitchen in the living room as we won't be able to stock the cabinets yet but we will be able to use the oven, cooktop, and sink (we already have a working microwave in the other room so don't have to use the new one yet).

All of this sounds exciting and exhausting.

It seems like a lot of items are being shipped incorrectly or damaged in shipping.
I’d be interested in a recap at the end of how often this occurred, and what you would do differently, if anything, next time.

It isn’t just your Reno, it seems like a theme in other Reno posts.

In my life, I’ve done 4 big renovations and I don’t remember any similar shipping/delivery problems. Maybe my memory has blocked them out!

This is our first real renovation job but we have had appliances arrive damaged in the past.

This time around, a couple of cabinet doors had dings from the factory and are getting replaced. The over the fridge cabinet has the wrong doors entirely. They don't match the rest of the kitchen and they were also not the right size for the cabinet so I don't know what happened there. It could be something as simple as somebody clicking the wrong box when they placed the order online.

The other problem item was the bathroom light. The first one had some flaws in the metal. Lesson learned to open the item in the store and inspect it before taking it home.

When it's all done I'll definitely post a recap, budget, and any thoughts of things that we might have done differently knowing what we know now.

You're getting to the fun stuff now! It will be huge to be able to use the sink.

LB absolutely. By the end of the week the sink, oven/cooktop, and microwave should all be usable. He's attaching the cabinet hardware now and we just got back from actually buying backsplash tile which will be in in 24-48 hours so he can install that on Friday and Monday probably. We just need to pick paint but couldn't do that until we had selected tile. But yes, having running water on the first floor will be a very nice thing. My wife has done pretty much all of the dish washing so I know she's looking forward to that. I'm looking forward to not having to go upstairs to fill the water pitcher or dump liquids.
